“N” is for Narwhal

 

Oil Pastel and Watercolor paintings with PreK-2

 

Students observed images and photographs of Narwhals in their natural environment. They used black oil pastel to outline the “n”, body, and fins.  They also added some details such as dots and speckles to one side of the narwhal, like we saw in some of the pictures we looked at.

Icy Ocean Waters

Children learned and used cool colors of watercolor—blue, green, and purple—to paint the water around the narwhal. They learned about the “wet on wet” technique; the students wet the paper first by painting with just water, and then they painted with the watercolor. 

Faces of Innocence Art Instillation at our school

I have been working with the Besharat Art foundation for their generous photography exhibition donation in our school. The series is titled, "Faces of Innocence" and is captured by National Geographic photographer, Steve McCurry. You can read more about the foundation here: https://besharatfoundation.org/

Besharat Arts Foundation Inc. donated 60 enlarged photographs on blown-up canvas and framed prints for exhibition in Moretown school. All of the featured photographs are from the Faces of Innocence collection shot by the renowned photographer Steve McCurry. This project exposes the children to life and cultures in different parts of the world and by educating the children that despite the superficial differences in people, everyone is the same on the inside. The daily contact with the photograph installations in the hallways and classrooms will promote discussion and empathy towards others in the young children attending the Moretown school.

Kindergarten Primary Color Collage

Mondrian Inspired Art

Kindergarten classes were introduced the primary colors-red, blue and yellow.  We looked at the artwork of Piet Mondrian and discussed his use of color– primary colors + neutral black and white.

We described the lines and shapes.  Kindergarten Artists then made their own Mondrian-inspired artwork using construction paper shapes.

METAL TOOLING USING VISUAL TEXTURE

Metal tooling, also called “repousse” and “metal embossing” is a type of low-relief sculpture in which tools are used to create a design on metal. 

This centuries old practice can be found in artworks including armor. All of these designs were heavily laden with visual texture.

Ancient civilizations created these metalworks for functional purposes like protection and utilitarian uses. 

In both instances, metal tooling art lends itself to creating visual textures and repetitive patterns on the surface of the metal.

Visual texture is an implied texture you can see like cloudy, shiny, and windy and can be drawn as such. However, tactile texture can be touched to understand how it will feel (bumpy, fuzzy, and smooth).

If the Dinosaurs Came Back

Illustrated Collages by the First and Second Grade Classes

   

 

Do you notice the lines in the illustrations? (zig-zag, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, wavy….)

 

We read the book, If the Dinosaurs Came Back. We noticed the illustrations and the rectangular buildings and windows. This created an opportunity to practice the lines we have learned in Art so far. We noticed: wavy, zig-zag, diagonal, vertical, horizontal, dotted and dashed lines in the illustrations.

Next we discussed, observed and drew a CityScape for our background with Sharpie. Some children chose to add color with paints, crayons or pastels.

 DINOSAUR COLLAGE

Students drew and designed their own dinosaurs to live in foreground of their CityScape. They chose a paper color and glue to create their collage. Some artists added more details (and more lines, shapes and patterns) with Sharpie.
